Why do planes approach and depart on certain runways at the Airport?

First, aircraft typically operate into the wind to assure adequate lift is available to climb or maintain stable descent on landing.  Second, when there is more than one runway in the same alignment, the selection of a runway is based on the efficiency of the operation.  Frequently aircraft land and takeoff from the runway nearest their base location on the airport.  For example, cargo aircraft at KCI generally use the west parallel runway because the taxi times to its ends are much less than to the ends of the east parallel runway.  Aircraft at Terminal A frequently use the west parallel runway and aircraft in Terminal C frequently use the east parallel runway.  The crosswind runway is not normally used except when winds are high from the west or east, or when its use enhances the efficiency of the traffic flow to or from the airport.
