Why is there more than one study area?
There are three different study areas: an Airport Master Plan, Noise Compatibility Study and Land Use Area Plan. The Airport Master Plan for KCI will provide a vision for the growth and development of the Airport over the next 20 years. It will establish a framework for the development of airport facilities and guide long-term on-airport land use and development decisions. The Airport Master Plan is prepared in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. The Noise Compatibility Study, to promote compatibility between the airport and its environs, is being prepared in accordance with Federal Aviation Regulation guidelines. The study sets out rules and guidelines and authorizes Federal assistance for the preparation of airport noise compatibility programs. The KCI Land Use Area Plan will explore land use and growth issues through the preparation of an Area Plan for the KCI planning area and its environs, approximately 58 sq. miles in size. The purpose of the Area Plan is to determine a future vision for the KCI Area that attempts to balance the interests and needs of the airport, area residents and businesses. These studies will identify long-term aviation and land use needs that will serve as the framework to guide the decision-making process as it relates to the KCI facilities and the City’s overall Comprehensive Plan. Aircraft noise is not only heard on the airport, but off-airport as well, it does not tend to follow jurisdictional boundaries. Whereas land use issues are limited to the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri.
