PREVIOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The following are links to the preliminary engineering report which includes an estimate of probable construction costs for a replacement airport at alternative sites, Site 10a and Site 12. In addition the land appraisals for the land acquisition at each site are provided. These cost estimates will continue to be updated and should be considered a work in progress. The estimates are based on current data and are subject to change and escalation. Please note these costs do not include providing utilities to each site (including gas, power, communications, and water), mitigation costs, and costs for the construction and installation of an FAA Airport Traffic Control Tower and navigational aids.

  • In the current Phase II of study, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been conducting a thorough analysis of the three proposed sites for the Friedman Memorial Replacement Airport: Site 4, Site 10A, and Site 12. As a result of additional aeronautical analysis, Site 4 has been eliminated from further evaluation in the EIS because it is unable to meet minimum requirements for instrument approach procedures stated in the purpose and need for the project. Sites 10a and 12 will continue to be evaluated in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

For Site 10a and Site 12, the FAA is posting the Airport Layout Plans, Area Vicinity Land Use Plans, and Re-Use Plans for the Existing Airport Site Airport Layout Plans:

The release of the Draft EIS is projected to be in late May, 2011. As mentioned in the media advisory in July of this year, this is due to additional geotechnical and other analytical requirements being completed as part of the Draft EIS. The Draft EIS will be available on the project website, at the existing airport administrative offices, and the local libraries and BLM offices. Once the Draft EIS is published a 90 day public comment period will begin. A public hearing will be held during the comment period.

  • Public information meetings and responses to comments received have concluded for Phase I. The next opportunity to respond to comments will be comments received on the Draft EIS document. However, all comments received will be accepted and reviewed, and will be considered in the preparation of the Draft EIS document.

  • The FAA has conducted an evaluation of the approaches into the Friedman Memorial Airport in response to questions that have arisen from the community. The questions included whether or not the FAA has exhausted all feasible technologies available that could improve approaches to the existing airport, thereby obviating the need to find a replacement airport. The first link below is the correspondence requesting the Flight Procedures Office (FPO) to further evaluate the technologies and the second link is the response from the FPO.

  • To ensure the public and FMAA board clearly understand the FAA's determinations made on the existing approaches into Friedman Memorial Airport, the Western Flights Procedures Office manager Jason Pitts answered questions and further explained the findings at the August 2009 FMAA board meeting. The following link is to the meeting minutes prepared by the FMAA of the briefing by Jason Pitts.

  • The Draft EIS, originally scheduled for release in July of this year, is now anticipated to be released in early 2011 due to additional geotechnical and other analytical requirements. Once the Draft EIS is published, a public hearing will start a 90 day public comment period. FAA releases the following reports/documents:

  • The release of the Draft EIS is postponed until late summer/early fall 2011. This is due to further refinements in the environmental and financial impact analysis being completed as part of the Draft EIS. The Draft EIS will be available on the project website, at the existing airport administrative offices, and the local libraries and BLM offices. Once the Draft EIS is published a 90 day public comment period will begin. A public hearing will be held during the comment period.
