Friedman Memorial Airport Authority (FMAA) has over the years undertaken a number of planning studies to address the deficient airfield design standards and the increasing demand on their facilities. In 2005 the FMAA prepared the Wood River Region Airport Site Selection and Feasibility Study, an outgrowth of the 2004 Airport Master Plan Update, to explore potential sites for a replacement airport. This would not only resolve the long-standing safety issues at Friedman Memorial Airport, but would serve the aviation needs of the Wood River Region for decades to come.

  • Three finalist sites from 1990 Site Selection Study were carried forward
  • Additional sites were developed using the following criteria
    • Drive time - approximately 60 minutes for airport users
    • Minimum land requirement of 600 acres
    • Suitable topography
